Abstract

Background: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent disorders in the child population, characterized by the presence of symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and alterations in executive functions. In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in investigating the application of Serious Games in the treatment of ADHD. Objective: to develop and test a Serious Games format treatment program to improve attention in children with ADHD and compare it with a traditional pencil and paper format treatment. Methodology: a two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures in one factor was applied to analyze the results obtained in the different tests applied to a cohort of 30 children between 8 and 10 years of age with ADHD. The attention improvement program of 16 sessions of 30-45 minutes, in Serious Games format, was applied to 15 children and 15 children in pencil and paper format. To evaluate the improvement in attention, attentional variables were evaluated using the CSAT-R tests, the Faces test, and the MFFT-20. The tests were applied at the beginning, in the ninth session, and at the end of the treatment. Results: both groups improved in the sensitivity index of the CSAT-R test (p <0.001), in selective attention evaluated by the Faces test (p <0.001), and in impulsivity and inefficiency evaluated by the MFFT-20 test (both p <0.001). Likewise, the Serious Games group shows a more marked improvement in the Faces test and the MFFT-20 test (for both impulsivity and inefficiency scores) than the pencil and paper group.
