Abstract

Introduction: the early treatment of malocclusions has become a controversial issue among orthodontists, who are debating their use. Objectives: the purpose of this article is to investigate scientific production in the last five years on the subject of malocclusions, and within this field in orthopedics as an approach to early treatment. Materials and methods: A study of bibliometric indicators with a temporal analysis for five years was carried out. The variables of annual production of articles, journals, authors, cooperation and analysis of citations were reviewed. Results: The year of greatest production was 2017 for both malocclusion in orthopedics and orthodontics. The most cited author on malocclusion in orthodontics was Janson, Guilherme with 27 publications and 65 citations. On the subject of malocclusion and orthopedics was Franchi, Lorenzo with 18 publications and 88 citations; the journal with the largest number of articles is the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. The United States, Italy and Brazil are the countries with the most disclosures associated with these issues. Conclusions: There is an annual increase in the production of malocclusion and orthodontics, while malocclusion and orthopedics have a lower production.
