Características del Suicidio al final del Siglo XX en Medellín

Abstract

Durante el período comprendido entre enero de 1992 y junio del año 2000 se presentaron en la ciudad de Medellín 940 muertes por suicidio. Aunque se ha registrado un leve aumento de la frecuencia anual, la tasa de mortalidad por suicidio ha permanecido relativamente constante en esta ciudad durante los últimos nueve años. La frecuencia de suicidio entre los hombres es 3 veces mayor que en las mujeres, la edad de promedio de los hombres fue 33 años y 28 años en las mujeres. Si bien en el grupo de 15 a 24 años de edad se presenta la mayor proporción de casos de suicidio (37%), debe tenerse en cuenta que el 5% de casos de suicidio en menores de 15 años, entre los cuales aparecen varios casos en menores de 10 años. Finalmente, la información revisada permitió establecer que en el 60% de los casos de suicidio hubo consumo previo de alguna sustancia psicoactiva incluido el alcohol etílico, y un 28% de consumo simultáneo de algunas de ellas. ABSTRACT During the period between January of 1992 and June of year 2000, 940 deaths by suicide appeared in the city of Medellin. Although a slight increase of the annual frequency has been registered, the rate of mortality by suicide has remained relatively constant in this city during last nine years. The frequency of suicide between the men is 3 times greater than in the women, the age average in the men was 33 years and it was 28 years in the women. Although in the group of 15 to 24 years of age the greater proportion of cases of suicide appears (37%), we must consider that 5% of cases of suicide happened in minors of 15 years, between which they appear several cases in minors of 10 years. Finally, the reviewed information allowed to establish that in 60% of the cases of suicide there was previous consumption of some psychoactive substance including the alcohol. and a 28% of simultaneous consumption of some of them.
