Abstract:

Halitosis has been defined as an offensive and fetid breath odor causedby factors such as poor oral hygiene, dental or mouth infections and / oringestion of certain foods. The aim of this review is to assess the currentstate of diagnosis, classification and treatment of halitosis, providing theright strategies and tools to address a problem that is so common in dentalpractice. Halitosis prevalence is high and varies depending on the populationstudied and the diagnostic method used (subjective scales, organolepticmeasurements, halymeter, gas chromatography, BANA test). There are3 types of halitosis: Genuine halitosis (physiological and pathological), thepseudohalitosis and halitophobia. The etiology is multifactorial and thereis an agreement about the cause primarily by bacterial metabolism. Theproduction of volatile and nonvolatile compounds in humans is common and is influenced by genetic factors, diet, stress, diseases and / or disorders presentin individuals. The two most used and traditional treatments to control halitosisare the mechanical control of coated tongue and the use of antimicrobial agents.Halitosis affects a large part of the population may create social and psychologicaldisadvantages, and although it is of multifactorial origin its main cause is in the oralcavity, being mostly intraoral factors such as plaque, gingivitis and periodontitis. Theaim of this article is to review current tools for diagnosis and treatment of halitosis.
