Abstract Growth and development spurts can supposedly be identified by a series of variables which include: ossification stage, weight, height and menarche (Hagg and Taranger, 1982). Growth and development spurts are essentially two: between the prenatal period and six months of age and the pubertal growth spurt (Hurlock, 1985). This is a longitudinal study of the craneofacial growth and development characteristics of three different Colombian pupulations: Aburrá Valley (urban), Damas¬co and Belmira (rural). The sample selected consisted of 85 males and 75 females for Belmira, 109 males and 100 females in Damasco and 156 males and 153 females in. the Aburrá Valley. Personal data which included name, sex and age were registered for each individual. Facial anthropometric measurements of the soft tissues were made with an adjustable compass. The measurements made were: Nasion-Columnella (middle third), Columnella-Menton (Iower third), Porion¬Columnella (maxillary length) and Porion-Pogonion (mandibular length). In the three studied populations sexual differences were observed in the anthropometric facial measurements with a greater mean average for males and with a gradual increase with age. In the Aburra Valley the middle third was greater for all ages; in Belmira bi¬maxillary protrusion was observed. It was concluded that craniofacial growth and development differences exist between ethnic groups and that there is also a sexual dimorphism.
