Abstract The general objetive of this research was the assessment of the therapeutic results of the functional orthopedic device Simoes Network 3 (SN3) in the treatment of the anterior open bite at an early age in onto- and postontogenic development, as well as the specific definition of its effect at the oseous and/or dentallevels. The study was carried out in a group of 11 children, 4 female and 7 male, their ages ranging from 7 to 12, to which the following basic studies were applied before initiating theraphy (baseline): c1inical history, lateral cephalic radiography, study casts, intra and extra oral photographs. The therapy with the SN3 had an average duration of 11,9 months, with the following results: In most patients the open bite was completely corrected, but 7 and 8 year old children showed the best results. The anterior -superior facial height had a significant increase, probably due to a descent in the level of the premaxila. Besides, the palatal plane showed a downward inc1ination at the anterior section. The two changes mentioned, contributed to the correction of the anterior open bite. Under the circumstances of the present study, the results obtained c1early indicate the effectiveness of the treatment of the anterior open bite with the SN3 at an early age.
