DESCRIPCIÓN Y ANÁLISIS DE LAS CONDICIONES DE HIGIENE ORAL Y GINGIVAL EN JÓVENES DE 7 A 17 AÑOS CON SÍNDROME DE DOWN Y RETARDO MENTAL MODERADO INSTITUCIONALIZADOS

Resumen

El objetivo general de este estudio fue describir y analizar la condición de higiene oral y el grado de gingivitis en un grupo de jóvenes de estrato socioeconómico bajo con síndrome de Down y retardo mental moderado, y la creación de un plan de prevención. Se registraron los índices de placa y gingival. La muestra se dividió por grupos de edad (7-10, 11-14 y 15-17 años) y por sexo.- Se encontró que el índice de placa incrementaba ligeramente con la edad en el sexo masculino (2.03-2.53), existiendo diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p=0.0018), especialmente en el grupo de mayor edad. El índice gingival no registró diferencias significativas (1.39-1.44) ni por edad ni por sexo (p=0.68). ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to describe and assess oral hygiene conditions and presence of gingivitis in a group of individuals between 7-17 years old with Down¢ s syndrome and moderate mental retardation as well as to establish a prevention program for them. Plaque and gingival indexes were used. The sample was separated into groups by age (7-10, 11-14, 15-17) and sex. Results showed that there was a significant statistical increase in the plaque index with age in the men¢ s group (2.03-2.53). On the other hand, no statistical significant differences were observed for the gingival index between ages (1.39-1.44) and sexes (p = 0.68).
