Abstract

Trichinellosis is a parasitic zoonosis, caused by the muscle dwelling nematodes Trichinella, it is transmitted by carnivorism, and the pig/human cycle has a major importance in health care implications and epidemiological research . It belongs to the Phylum Nemathelminthes, Class Nemátoda, Order Enoplida, Family Trichinellidae, Gender Trichinella, several species exist like Trichinella spiralis that affect humans, pigs, dogs, cats, rodents, horse and is the most frequently isolated, other species like T. native T. nelsoni, T. britovi, T. murreli, T. papue, T. zimbabwensis and T. pseudoespiralis infect wild animal like bears, walruses and whales, that acquire importance in the poles where the meat of these animals is consumed and constitutes the infection and the prevalence of the disease10, 14. The distribution is world-wide, although its presence in some desert and tropical areas has not been reported 9. The main symptoms of trichinellosis infection in humans are nausea; diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and abdominal discomfort; but the most important are eye swelling and eosinophilia 1, 6. The treatment is based on the use of anthelmintics like albendazol and fl ubendazol 16. The diagnosis can be direct searching of the larvae in the muscular tissue or indirect detecting different immunological answers by serological tests 5, 13. The defi ciencies of sanitary, nutritional and management practices in pigs that are not bred in specialized establishments are favorable for the development of the disease in the pig, becoming a problem for public health, that is the reason why the epidemiologist control of the disease in the pig in slaughter houses is an important factor to prevent the transmission.
}, number={2}, journal={CES Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia}, author={Builes Cuartas, Lorena Marcela and Laverde Trujillo, Laura María}, year={2010}, month={abr.}, pages={130–136} }
