Resumen

Los accidentes ofídicos en Colombia, además de representar un problema de salud pública, causan pérdidas económicas considerables en el sector pecuario. Las condiciones en el campo no siempre permiten atender con prontitud a los animales afectados. Por esta razón no se ha generado información que contenga un protocolo de alta aplicabilidad para recuperar la salud e integridad de estos animales. Frecuentemente se observa como en cada región se implementan distintos métodos
empíricos propios que sólo terminan complicando el cuadro clínico. La pérdida de animales por accidente ofídico que sobreviven al ataque inicial, se presentan en su mayoría por un manejo inadecuado del proceso toxémico desarrollado. Son pocos los profesionales que hacen un manejo integral del paciente hasta su completa recuperación. Esto pone en evidencia la necesidad de estudiar y analizar a fondo este proceso, con monitoreo del mismo hasta establecer uno o varios protocolos para bovinos y especies mayores que permitan abordar correctamente, desde el principio, este tipo de accidentes incluyendo sus implicaciones clínicas posteriores.

Abstract

Ophidic accidents in Colombia represent cause a great loss in the economy and in the cattle industry. The countryside does not offer the best means to treat animals that have been bitten by snakes and even worse, reaching them in the fields is not as fast as it should be. Many times, countrymen take action and perform incorrect popular techniques that only end up making things worse. The procedures in the treatment of the patient become more complicated and the outcomes less optimistic. Another flaw is the fact that many practitioners only tend to treat the patient at the moment of the events and do not follow the whole recovery process. This is why many of the animals that survive the attack have to be discarded afterwards because there is an inadequate management in the toxemic process that takes place after the snakebite.
Serious studies must be carried out to determine specific protocols and procedures to be followed in the treatment of these injuries in order to prevent further mishappenings.
