Summary
Objective. To characterize the population of men andwomen of 20 to 64 years of the Medellín in 2005, accordingto demographic components and affiliation to the GeneralSystem of Social Security.
Methods. Cross-sectional descriptive population study, with primary source of information constituted by twosamples: 659 men and 683 women of 20 to 64 years, represented 523 705 and 651 704 respectively, accordingto factors of population expansion; selected withprobabilistic complex sampling, stratified, conglomerates,multi-stage.
Results. The men represent 44,6 % of the inhabitants ofthe City, have a mediane age of 37 years; 41 % areunmarried and married 35 %; 56 % were born in Medellínand returned to their native city 6 %.
