Abstract

Introduction: Worldwide, gastric cancer is among the cancers of higherprevalence and incidence. In Colombia, Pasto has the higher number ofnew cases of gastric cancer, nonetheless, the tendence of mortality andyears of potential life lost of this kind of cancer are unknown. Objective:To characterize cancer mortality in Pasto in the period from 2003 to 2007.Methods: A secondary source descriptive study was conducted, the sex,age and year of death were employed in the analysis. Crudes and age-adjustedrates of mortality and years of potential life lost were calculated. Results: 269 deaths were included, most of the dead were men (58,0%).Betwen Men has 80% higher cancer gastric mortality risk than womenrisk of dying from gastric cancer is 80 % higher than in women. The risk ofdying from gastric cancer increases in population over 75 years. The burdenof gastric cancer mortality is higher in men than in women. Discution:gastric cancer mortality in the municipality of Pasto is among the highest in the world. Years of potential life lost for gastric cancer indicate that chronic diseasesare affecting the young population of Pasto.
