Factors associated with successful treatment of tuberculosis patients in Medellin, 2014
Abstract
Introduction: The susceptibility to tuberculosis is universal. However, there are particularconditions that increase the risk of acquiring it. The aim of this research isto determine the demographic and clinical factors associated with successful treatmentof tuberculosis in the city of Medellin in the year 2014. Materials and Methods:quantitative, analytical observational, cross-sectional methodological approach in atotal of 837 patients with tuberculosis. The data were collected from the databaseTuberculosis Information System provided by the Ministry of Health of Medellin in2014. The information was organized and analyzed through Excel and SPSS softwareversion 21 License University CES. Results: The prevalence of success in treatingtuberculosis of 77.1% was demonstrated associations between the presenceof this event and sex, with a higher probability of success among women. As for themembership scheme, the prevalence of treatment success in patients affiliated tothe contributory scheme was higher, with respect to subsidized (OR: 3, 147 - 95%CI 2.107 to 4.702), followed in the latter respect the associated (OR 95% CI 0.314 to0.832 0,511-). In relation to the area of residence it was found that 36.6% of all patientswith tuberculosis of the municipality belong to the Northeast area. It was alsoapparent a statistically significant relationship between substance use and treatmentsuccess (OR: 2,449- 95% CI 1.605 to 3.735). Likewise, those who did not haveany medical condition associated, had higher treatment success (OR: 1.568; 95% CI1.123 to 2.190). Finally, when analyzing features related to the operation of the program,there was observed that those who remained in the program for more than196 days had a higher prevalence of success (OR: 12,734 - 95% CI 7.723 to 20.994).Conclusion: The successful of the treatment of tuberculosis is primarily associatedwith factors related to permanence in the program in the first levels of care, beingthe time of stay in the program the main associated factor, and it is from there thatshould identify the presence of elements related to the success of the therapy evidencedin this research, such as the behavior of the male users, the substance useand to belong to the subsidized regime. All this, in order to intervene these conditionsand reduce its negative impact to ensure the success of therapy.Downloads
