ABSTRACT

A contextualized understanding of prostitution was suggested, centered on the subjectivity and the social constructions about that practice. The research answered the question: What are the significant about corporality, sexual commerce with clients, experience of love and identity, constructed by the women who practiced prostitution? It was a qualitative design and its methodological strategy was a multiple case study; it was focused on five women between 33 and 50 years old who practiced street prostitution in Medellin. They all were beneficiaries of the municipal program “Por una vida más digna” (For a More Dignified Life). The techniques on generation the information were collected with rigorous interviews and non participant observation. It was found that the sexual trade is fair for the participants as long as it is received by them and by their clients like something similar to “happiness ";;;. However this fair interchange doesn’t mean that prostitution is not signified as being painful since the sexual intercourse should imply love for them. Finally, it was also found that in spite of the participants don’t practice prostitution anymore, they still consider it as a current experience that configures their own definitions and their way of interacting with others. It is concluded that in the experience of body in prostitution, a mark is left by the subjectivity and by the way to understand certain social dispositions, which are necessary to be included in society.
