The ICDAS system as a complementary method for the diagnosis of dental caries

Dental caries has been considered as one of the most prevalent disease worldwide. Different conventional methods have been used for its diagnosis such as visual and tactile examination and digital and non-conventional radiography like transillumination and laser fluorescence. The International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and NYVAD System (a diagnostic system proposed by NYVAD), are among the conventional methods which have demonstrated good reproducibility and validity. The scientific literature confirms the fact that these systems help detecting the tooth decay in early stages and severity estimation. Compared to the NYVAD system, the ICDAS method improves the performance in terms of sensibility and reliability, being the ideal method for caries diagnosis. This literature review took into account data since 2003 which included reviews and comparative studies where it is demonstrated that the ICDAS is used as an efficient method for the caries detection in early stage.

Key Words: Caries, ICDAS, prevalence.
