CAMBIOS DIMENSIONALES DE LOS ARCOS DENTALES DURANTE EL CRECIMIENTO Y DESARROLLO EN NIÑOS DE 6 A 13 AÑOS DEL CORREGIMIENTO DE DAMASCO. REPORTE PRELIMINAR

Resumen

Para realizar el estudio se escogieron 101 indivi¬duos, 45 niños y 56 niñas del corregimiento de Damasco (Antioquia), con características socio¬económicas bajas. Se les tomó un modelo seriado anualmente y se obtuvieron mediciones del ancho intercanino maxilar y mandibular, amplitud molar maxilar y mandibular, longitud del arco maxilar y mandibular horizontal y vertical e índice de irregula¬ridad. Se encontró que el ancho intercanino aumen¬tó durante la etapa de dentición mixta y luego co¬menzó a disminuir. La amplitud molar presentó una tendencia a aumentar y luego permaneció estable. La longitud del arco aumentó hasta los 11 años y luego comenzó a disminuir sin presentar diferen¬cias por sexo. La sobremordida horizontal y vertical aumentó progresivamente durante la etapa de den-tición mixta y posteriormente disminuyó. El índice de irregularidad mostró una prevalencia de grado A y B. Como conclusión general nuestro estudio mostró una tendencia de crecimiento y desarrollo dentoalveolar diferente a otras partes en el mundo. De esta manera es posible identificar los patrones de crecimiento de nuestra población. Este es el primer reporte de la investigación, la cual es longitudinal con registros hasta 1998. Abstract A longitudinal study in order to evaluate the development of occlusion in the population of Damasco (Colombia) was done. 101 individuals, 45 boys and 56 girls with a low socio-economic status were selected. Annual models were taken and the following measurements were made: maxillary and mandibular intercanine width, maxillary and mandibular intermolar width, maxillary and mandibular arch length, overbite, ove~et and the irregularity index. Intercanine width increase during the mixed dentition and afterwards began to decrease. The intermolar width had an initial tendency to increase, and afterwards estabilized. Arch length increase until the age of 11 and afterwards began to decrease without any differences between sexes. Overbite and overjet increased during the mixed dentition and afterwards decreased. The irregularity index showed a grade A and B prevalence. As a general conclusión this study showed that there are different dento-alveolar growth and development tendencies when compared with those of other parts of the world and therefore allowing the identification of specific growth pattems for the Colombian population. This is a preliminary report of a longitudinal research trat will continue until1998.
