Abstract This investigation in part of a longitudinal 10 year study that wi I1 assess and eval u ate the general growth and development characteristics of three different Colombian populations: Aburra Valley (urban), Damasco and Belmira (rural). The sample selected for the study included individuals with different ethnic and socio-economic background, and was composed of men and women between the ages of 8 - 17 years of age. The variables which were studied included: height, weight, ossification stage and age of menarche. An increment with age was found for the weight, height and ossification stage variables. The greatest incrementin height was seen between the FG and G ossification stages in men and women of the three populations. The women in Belmira presented an earlier age of menarche than in the Aburra Valley and Damasco where there is an influence of genetic and environmental factors. A conclusion is reached that there is a growth sexual dimorphism where men present the greatest differences. The lower height measurements in Belmira must be considered, where genetic and environmental factors may be directly related with the variations in weight, height and skeletal maturation.
