Abstract The prophylactic value of once-daily mouth rinses with a solution ofO.2% chlorhexidine gluconate in minimizing plaque and gingivitis during remission chemotherapy was tested in twelve patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Standardized measurement indexes were employed to assess the dental plaque levels and the degree of gingivitis. Lower average dental plaque scores and gingivitis scores were recorded over the study periodo The plaque scores were continuosly decreasing while the gingivitis scores were increasing during the second period and decreasing during the third periodo In addition, there was a statiscally significant reduction in plaque scores and gingivitis scores, but there was no statiscally significant difference between the first control and the second control in the gingival index. However, in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in remission chemotherapy wouldn' t be justified the use of chlorhexidine because of their good periodontal health.
